Color or black & white???
Never know the answer to the question. There are two sides to the story and here is why.
My background is more ‘noir’, European. Most of European today’s photography is black & white and it seems to be a default thing really. Perhaps it is so as it strengthens the notion of ‘documentary’ in it, perhaps as it carries more emotions as it takes away the color and the ‘natural’ beauty of the shot and places it on the mood/action of the subjects rather than the tones…. Don’t know. So, yes I believe that some shots will look better black&white, some must be colorful. Perhaps it depends where you shoot and what you want to convey/tell through the photo-story. I can’t imagine shots from India to be B&W but then, hey, maybe that’s the key – let them be black and white – let them be ‘different’.
Have a look at the same shot in color and monochrome. Here is the dilemma….
Compering them, I also thought that the b&w are more ‘mysterious’, less obvious. Since the dresses are not colorful, I thought it does not matter much, I don’t lose much…..perhaps I can gain more of the unique document…? What do you think?
